At the prestigious Easter Bowl, the nation’s top junior players gather each spring to test themselves against elite competition. This year, Catherine Chan of Manhasset, New York, and her partner Alara Buyukuncu of Irvine, California battled all the way to the Girls’ 12U doubles final.
A Partnership That Clicked
Though separated by geography, Chan and Buyukuncu quickly found rhythm as a team. Chan’s consistency from the baseline and court awareness paired with Buyukuncu’s aggressive net play, giving them a balanced and dynamic presence against every opponent they faced.
Building Momentum: Early Rounds

Their tournament began with a commanding Round of 32 performance, cruising to a 6–1, 6–2 victory. They followed it with a tougher Round of 16 match, where they showed early signs of their grit—winning 6–4, 2–6, 10–2 in a match tiebreak that tested their composure and teamwork.
Statement Win in the Quarterfinals
Facing the No. 4-seeded team in the quarterfinals, Chan and Buyukuncu delivered one of their most complete matches of the event. With confident shot-making they secured a 6–4, 6–2 win, knocking out one of the tournament favorites.
Rising to the Occasion in the Semifinals
The semifinals brought an even bigger challenge: the No. 2 seeds. After dropping the first set 3–6, Chan and Buyukuncu responded with determination and tactical adjustments. They took control of the match, winning the next two sets 6–3, 6–2 to punch their ticket to the final.
A Hard-Fought Championship Match
In the final, they faced the No. 3-seeded team and came out strong, capturing the first set 6–3 with confident, aggressive play. Their opponents responded in the second, edging it 6–4 in a tightly contested set. In the deciding third set, despite their efforts, Chan and Buyukuncu fell 6–1, finishing as finalists after an outstanding run.
More Than a Result
While the final didn’t go their way, their journey through the draw told a powerful story. They defeated higher-seeded teams, handled pressure moments with poise, and grew stronger with each match. Their ability to rebound from setbacks, especially in the semifinals, underscored their competitive maturity well beyond their years.
